Fleming, who graduated in 2007 with a first in Economics and Finance, turned in two further first class performances against Hungary, winning his doubles rubber on Saturday and following up with a singles victory on Sunday at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire.
The 27-year-old and regular doubles partner Ross Hutchins eased past Attila Balazs and Kornel Bardoczky 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to guarantee promotion.
Then, in a dead rubber, he secured a 5-0 Group Two play-off whitewash, defeating Sebo Kiss 6-4, 6-3 much to the delight of a vocal home support which included many players from the University’s tennis club.
Fleming, 43rd in the ATP World Tour doubles rankings, said: “It was a great weekend for the team and I was really pleased to get my first singles win. To do it in front of a home crowd makes it extra special.”
Davis Cup success adds to an impressive 2011 for Fleming and Hutchins, having reached the doubles quarter-finals at Wimbledon and at the US Open.
The Linlithgow ace also won a gold medal in the mixed doubles at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi with Jocelyn Rae.
He expects to return to training at the University in October, where he will link up with performance coach Euan McGinn.
