Study abroad: English language requirements

Before you apply for our Study Abroad Programme, check you meet our English language requirements.

You’ll need to be sufficiently fluent in English language to get maximum benefit from our courses. If English isn’t your first language, we’ll ask you to demonstrate a measure of your English ability. This applies if you’re a fee paying study abroad student.

Applying from the EU/EEA/Switzerland

You’ll need to show your English language ability in one of the following ways:

  1. Include a reference letter that confirms your English language level is suitable to carry out the academic programme (applies only to current university-level students applying from an approved study abroad or exchange partner, and studying in the UK for less than six months); or
  2. Evidence of having passed one of the approved tests on our English Language Qualifications List; or
  3. Evidence that your primary medium of instruction is English.

Students coming to study for more than six months will require a visa and will need to provide evidence as described in points 2 or 3 above. 

Applying from outside of the EU/EEA

If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to provide evidence of having passed one of the approved tests at CEFR Level B2 or above on our English Language Qualifications List. Otherwise, if you’re from a native English speaking country outside of the EU, you don’t need to provide evidence of your English language skills.
