Entry and English language requirements

Select your country below to find details of the country-specific qualifications we accept for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Please also check the specific grades and essential subjects required for your chosen course by checking our individual course pages. If you have taken qualifications from another country’s education system (eg. the US High School Diploma) please refer to the relevant country page for details of the entry requirement.

European Baccalaureate

The University welcomes applications from students studying towards the European Baccalaureate. Normally, applicants are required to obtain an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the programme they are applying to.

International Baccalaureate

We welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the programme. We may also stipulate certain HL subjects for some programmes. Further details can be found on our individual course pages.

English Language

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your English language skills. For a complete list of the English language qualifications we accept, including where we are able to waive an English condition based on certain local qualifications, please see our English Language Requirements.

Austria

  • Reifeprüfungszeugnis/Maturazeugnis with a minimum score of 2.0 (gut) in all subjects. Applicants must have a minimum score of 2.0 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - We welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course.  We may also stipulate certain HL subjects for some courses. Further details can be found on our individual course pages. Applicants must have a minimum score of HL5 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum average of 3.0 in a Bachelor's degree or Fachhochschuldiplom/Diplom (FH).

Belgium

We require a minimum of 70% or 7.0 of 10 (overall) in one of the following qualifications: 

  • Certificate d'Enseignement Secondaire Superieur
  • Diploma van Hoger Secundair Onderwijs
  • Abschlusszeugnis der Oberstufe des Sekundarunterrichts 

You must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject required for the course. 

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 12/20 or 60% in one of the following qualifications:

  • Licence
  • Licentiaat
  • Bachelor's degree

Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Matura with an average 4.0/5.0. Applicants must have a minimum score of 4.0 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Bulgaria

Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie with 5 in all school leaving and state maturity examinations and 5 in all final year subjects. Applicants must have a minimum score of 5 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 4/6 in a Bachelor's degree or Professional Bachelor's degree.

Croatia

  • Svjedodžba o Maturi/Državna Matura with an average at grade 3 or above. Applicants must have a minimum score of 4 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 3.0/5 in Diploma Visokog Obrazovanja or Baccalaureus/Baccalaurea.

Cyprus

Cypriot Apolytirion

An overall score of 17.5 in the Cypriot Apolytirion. Applicants must have a minimum score of 18 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum GPA of 6.5 in the Ptychion for most Masters level courses.

Czech Republic

  • Vysvědčení o maturitní zkoušce (Maturita) with an overall grade 2.5 (2,2,3,3) or better. Applicants must have a minimum score of 3 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 2 in Bakalar.

Denmark

An average score of 7 in the Studentereksamen/HF. Applicants must have a minimum score of 7 in any essential subject required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Candidatus Philosophiae - minimum of 4 in an undergraduate degree programme.

Estonia

  • Gumnaasiumi Lõputunnistus and Riigieksamitunnistus (Secondary School Leaving Certificate with the State Examination Certificate) with 4 overall and 70% average in three State Examinations. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 3 or C or 70% in Bachelor's degree or Professional or Specialist Higher Education Diploma.

Finland

  • Ylioppilastutkinto / Studentexamen (Matriculation Examination) with M (Grade 5) in all subjects. Applicants must have a minimum score of M (Grade 5) in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 1.5/3 or 3/5 in Kandidat or Kandidaatti.

France

An overall score of 12 in the French Baccalaureate or 11 in the OIB/BFI. Applicants must have a minimum score of 12 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
    International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. 11 in the Licence for most Masters level courses.

Georgia

We usually require school leavers from Georgia to complete a Foundation Year programme for entry to an undergraduate course. Find out more about the University of Stirling's Foundation programmes.

We also accept applications from students who have completed one year of relevant university study.

We can also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 75% in a Bachelor's degree or Specialist Diploma.

Germany

Minimum 2.2 in the German Abitur depending on the course being applied for. Applicants must have a minimum score of 12 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 2.8 in the Diploma/Staatsprufung for entry to most Masters level courses.

Greece

Overall score of 17.5 in the Apolytirion of Geniko Lykeio for entry to most undergraduate courses. Applicants must have a minimum score of 17.5 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 6.0/10 in the Pytchion from an AEI or a minimum of 6.5/10 in the Pytchion from a TEI.

 

Hungary

  • Erettségi Vizsga with an average at grade 3.5. Applicants must have a minimum score of 4 in the advanced exam of any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 3.0 in Egyetemi Oklevel (Diploma).

Iceland

 6.5 or higher in the Stúdentspróf. Applicants must have a minimum score of 6.5 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 6.5 in a Baccalaureatus (Bachelor's degree).

Italy

Diploma di Esame di Stato with an overall score of 75/100. Applicants must have a minimum score of 8/10 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum score of 90/110 in one of the following qualifications:

  • Diploma di Laurea
  • Diploma Accademico di Primo Livello
  • Diploma di Mediatore Linguistico
  • Licenza di Accademia di Belle Arti

 

Latvia

  • Atestāts par vispārējo vidējo izglītību with an average grade 7 overall and 70% in two State examinations. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in a state exam in any essential subject that is required for the course.

  • Brandos Atestatas with an average grade 7.5 overall. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in a state exam in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Matriculation Certificate with grades BC at Advanced Level and BCC at Intermediate Level. Applicants must have a minimum score of B at advanced level in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Netherlands

Average grade of 6.8 in the Diploma Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO) or 6.8 in a relevant subject in the MBO Level 4 Middenkaderopleiding (MBO-4). Applicants must have a minimum score of 7.0 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 6/10 in a Bachelor's degree or Doctoraal.

Norway

Minimum of 3.5 in the Norwegian Vitnemal for entry to most undergraduate courses. Applicants must have a minimum score of 4 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. For entry to our postgraduate courses we require a minimum of grade C minimum at Bachelor’s level.

Poland

Average score in the Matura of at least 70%, with 3 subjects at an Advanced Level. Applicants must have a minimum score of 75% at Advanced Level in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.
  • International Baccalaureate - we welcome applications from students taking the full diploma with the overall points requirement depending on the course. Minimum of 4 (or Grade C) in the Licencjat.

Portugal

An average Grade 16 in the Diploma/Certificado Nível Secundário de Educação. Applicants must have a minimum score of 17 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 14/20 in the Licenciado or Diploma de Estudos Superiores Especializados (DESE).

Republic of Ireland

Irish Leaving Certificate with up to five subjects at Honour Levels at grades H2 or H3 depending on the course of study. Applicants must have a minimum score of H2 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We also accept:

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of a lower second class Bachelor's degree for entry to most Master level courses.

Romania

Diploma de Bacalaureat with 7.8 overall. Applicants must have a minimum score of 8 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Russia

Average score of 7 in the Titulo de Bachiller. Applicants must have a minimum score of 8 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum of 6/10 (old system) or 1.5/4 (new system) in Licenciado or Titulo de Grado.

Sweden

Högskoleförberedande Examen/Slutbetyg från gymnasieskola with E in all subjects and C in 5 final year subjects. Applicants must have a minimum score of B in final year in any essential subject that is required for the course.

  • European Baccalaureate with an overall score of between 60 - 70%, depending on the course. Applicants must have a minimum score of 70% in any essential subject that is required for the course.

Minimum grade of Godkand in the Kandidatexamen for entry to most Masters level courses.

Switzerland

Certificat de Maturité Federale / Maturitätszeugnis/ Attestato Di Maturità at grade 4.5. Applicants must have a minimum score of 5 in any essential subject that is required for the course.

We accept the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4/6 in the Diplom/Staatsdiplom.
  • Minimum of 6/10 in the Licence.
  • Gut in the Diplôme d'Etat.

Turkey

Minimum of 80% overall in Grade 12 of the Lise Diplomasi, with 80% in relevant subjects.

Minimum of 70% overall in Grade 12 of the Lise Diplomasi, with 70% in relevant subjects, from approved schools - contact international@stir.ac.uk for further details.

Students with IB, A-Levels or the American High School Diploma can be considered for direct entry. Please see course pages for requirements.

We also accept applications from students who have completed one year of relevant university study in Turkey.

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of CGPA of 2.7/4.0 from a recognised university.

Ukraine

We usually require school leavers from Ukraine to complete a Foundation Year programme for entry to an undergraduate course. Find out more about the University of Stirling's Foundation programmes.

We also accept applications from students who have completed one year of relevant university study. We also accept the International Baccalaureate. Students from the Republic of Ireland who are ordinarily resident in Ireland will be classed as ‘RUK’ for fee status purposes, and are eligible for the same tuition fees and scholarships as students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland:
