Entry and English language requirements

Select your country below to find details of the international qualifications we accept for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Please also check the specific grades and essential subjects required for your chosen course by checking our individual course pages.

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your English language skills. For a complete list of the English language qualifications we accept, including where we are able to waive an English condition based on certain local qualifications, please see our .

China

Undergraduate

Direct entry to Year 1

  • 3-year Chinese Senior Secondary (Senior High) School Graduation Certificate with 70% overall.
  • 2-year Chinese Huikao exam result 75% overall (Provinces without Huikao exams, students can apply with 75% overall from 6 modules).

Chinese Gaokao with a score of:

  • 420 of 750 Majority of China
  • 370 of 660 Shanghai
  • 504 of 900 Hainan

Other qualifications:

Foundation qualification from pathway providers or universities will be considered for Year 1 entry.

Direct entry to Year 2

Chinese Gaokao with a score of:

  • 495 of 750 Majority of China
  • 435 of 660 Shanghai
  • 594 of 900 Hainan

Foundation qualification from pathway providers or universities will be considered for Year 2 entry.

Postgraduate

  • Graduating with a minimum of 65% in a four year Bachelor’s degree from a 211 or 985 university.
  • Graduating with a minimum of 70% in a four year Bachelor’s degree from other universities.

Applicants who hold China diploma with relevant work experience, or China adult/self-taught undergraduate qualification will be also considered for direct entry.    

Hong Kong (SAR)

Undergraduate

Holders of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A - Levels obtained locally, will be considered for direct admission to Undergraduate Degree courses for both Year 1 and Year 2 entry. Details of the required subjects and grades for each degree can be found on course webpages.

Completed Hong Kong Higher Diplomas and Hong Kong Associate Degrees with a GPA of 2.9-3.3 may also be acceptable for Year 2 entry. Contact our Admissions team for course specific entry requirements from these programmes.

Direct Entry to Undergraduate courses from HKDSE

Year 1 Entry
A-Level BBB-BBC equivalent courses
3-3-3 in three subjects from core or elective subjects

Year 2 Entry
Year 1 ABB equivalent courses (Law for example)
4-3-3 in three subjects from core or elective subjects

  • Where specific A-Levels are required for any course, an elective in that subject will be required from HKDSE category A electives.
  • We do not accept Integrated / Combined Science electives for degrees that require a full A-level subject in that area (Biology for example).

Where A-level Maths is required for any course, you will need to take Extended Mathematics. We accept both M1: Calculus and Statistics and M2: Algebra and Calculus.

Postgraduate

We welcome applications from applicants holding a minimum grade of a 2.2 equivalent (2.3 GPA, C+) in a four year Bachelor’s degree (Honours).

English language requirements

We also accept HKDSE English in place of IELTS, below are the required grades.

IELTS: 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill
HKDSE: Overall 3 with a minimum 3 in each skill

IELTS: 7.0 with 6.5 in each skill
HKDSE: Overall 4 with a minimum 4 in each skill

Submission of IELTS and other recognised English language tests may be waived on a case by case basis, if the medium of instruction at previous study was in English and within the last five years. We require an official letter from your university or college. This waiver does not apply for courses that require higher than an IELTS 6.0.

Japan

Undergraduate

Direct entry to 1st Year:

We require school leavers with a kōtōgakkō Sotsugyoshomeisho to complete a Foundation Year for entry to the University. Find out more about our Foundation and pathway options. 

We also welcome applications from students who have completed one year of university study in Japan.

Postgraduate

Minimum of 65% or Grade C or GPA 2.0/4.0 in a Bachelor's degree.

Macau

Undergraduate

Successful completion of Form 6 with average grade of 75%

Postgraduate

Minimum GPA of 2.7 in bachelor's degree or Licenciatura

South Korea

Undergraduate

The University welcomes applications from students who have achieved a Grade 4 or above in the Korean High School Diploma.

Postgraduate

The University welcomes applications from students who have achieved a minimum GPA of  2.7/4.3 or 3.0/4.5 in a Bachelor degree.

Taiwan

Undergraduate

Direct Entry to 1st Year: Successful completion of Senior High School Diploma with a minimum 75% overall.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements must complete a Foundation programme for entry to the University. Find out more about our Foundation and pathway programmes.

Postgraduate

Graduating with a minimum of 65% in a four year Bachelor's degree.

English language requirements
