In the dynamic landscape of health and social care, it is crucial to be able to adjust and reassess our comprehension and execution of leadership and management. However, navigating the expanding evidence, theories, and approaches to effective leadership and management can pose a challenge. This module is well-suited for both aspiring and experienced leaders and managers seeking to cultivate a practical understanding of leadership and management in today's health and social care context.
The key aim of this module is to examine leadership theory and identify effective leadership characteristics critical to team success. The module will explore major theoretical and practice debates in specific fields of leadership and change management and investigate effective leadership and the development of successful teams within organisations. The module lays the foundation for examining and developing self-leadership knowledge, capabilities, and behaviours, whatever your responsibilities are within a health care setting or organisational context.
Entrance requirements
English language requirements
If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:
- IELTS Academic or UKVI 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-skill.
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) 60 overall with a minimum of 59 in each sub-skill.
- IBT TOEFL 78 overall with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing.

1. Consolidate subject knowledge of leadership theory underpinning professional practice.
2. Evaluate discipline specific, professional drivers that support excellence in health and social care.
3. Critically appraise the role of leadership in implementing evidence-based improvement in the health and social care context.
4. Critically appraise the process of reflection to support the development of leadership skills and attributes for ongoing personal and professional development.
5. Apply principles of leadership theory to professional practice scenarios.

Delivery and assessment
The module is delivered fully online. The assessment provides an opportunity for you to develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of leadership and management and how this underpins your professional practice. By reflecting on your experiences, you will pinpoint your unique leadership traits and abilities. Utilising leadership strategies, you will document the process involved in identify and implement enhancements in evidence-based practices and professional accountability.
