Overview

The module is concerned with studying the key elements of healthcare leadership, in particular compassionate leadership, management, implementation science and quality improvement. The module is a core module for students undertaking the MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting), but it would also be relevant for practitioners working in healthcare.  

You will explore compassionate leadership, leadership theories, leadership for the implementation of evidence-based practice, innovation and quality improvement and their application to healthcare practice. The course provides knowledge on the background to theories of leadership; the current focus on leadership at all levels within healthcare; the need for the implementation of evidence-based knowledge to support practice and the necessity for a working knowledge of quality improvement methods and leadership for these. You will also explore theories of learning and their application in healthcare practice and the legal aspects of the health visitor role.

The blend of learning and topics covered makes this module both appealing and distinctive.  It involves the development of a range of skills including leadership, communication and presentation skills and implementation knowledge and skills for improving the quality of health care practice. These are directly relevant to the practice of contemporary health visiting, school nursing and healthcare practice. This module is offered by the multi-award winning Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport, led by a group of world-leading academics, with strong and established research records, real healthcare experience and a wealth of world-class publications who will support you both personally and academically.

Entrance requirements

You are required to have the ability to study at degree level (minimum academic level SCQF Level 9).

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

  • IELTS Academic or UKVI 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-skill.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) 60 overall with a minimum of 59 in each sub-skill.
  • IBT TOEFL 78 overall with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing.

Objectives

You will:

1. Critically explore the skills and knowledge required to undertake key leadership roles and lead research and innovation in health visiting practice to improve the quality of care.

2. Evaluate relevant policies, legislation and guidance for contemporary healthcare services and reflect on the role of leadership in their application to practice on their application to practice to support healthy environments and workplace cultures now and in the future.

3. Apply advanced knowledge and skills in compassionate leadership for implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of programmes or new services to improve the quality of care and the outcomes for children, families, communities and populations.

4. Critically appraise learning theories and their application to practice to support a culture of learning and continuous professional development ensuring the delivery of safe and effective practice.

5. Critically reflect on the impact of a compassionate leadership approach on the application of human rights, equality, diversity and inclusion working within a multi-disciplinary forum to meet the needs and improve the health and wellbeing of children, families, communities and populations.

Structure and content

This module utilises a blended approach to teaching and learning to stimulate critical discussion and enhance learning, generate deeper understanding and foster the development of graduate attributes. You’ll have the opportunity to attend a masterclass delivered by expert and keynote speakers providing real world experience and up to date research which will enable you to apply theoretical learning from the module content to key topics that reflect public health priorities.

Delivery and assessment

The module will be assessed by means of a 100% individual assignment.

You will be required to complete a Poster Presentation of a detailed proposal for a Quality Improvement Project.
