What you can do

Use less plastic. Turn off the lights. Recycle your rubbish. You already know this. So, instead of why, we will tell you how staff and students can play their part.

From using our recycling facilities to getting involved in clubs, taking small steps together can make a big difference.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • Buy clothing secondhand through the Student Union's environmental hub at the Green and Blue Space.
  • The Green and Blue Space will your unused clothing items, kitchenware and homeware. 
  • Get discounts using a reusable coffee mug (download the university app for discounts).
  • We provide recycling bins throughout the campus.
  • The Green and Blue Space also recycles soft plastic, batteries and vapes.

Travel more sustainably

  • Staff and students get discounts on buses to the university.
  • Nextbikes run by Santander Cycles Stirling is a bike share scheme with locations throughout Stirling, Bridge of Allan and on our campus.
  • University of Stirling staff can save over 25% money on the purchase of bikes and accessories and spread the costs through Cyclescheme.

Volunteer for the Green and Blue Space

The Green and Blue Space is a thriving sustainability hub on campus. The hub coordinates projects on recycling, zero waste and gardening. It also organises film nights and workshops. The hub is run by student volunteers with support from lead students and union staff so volunteers are not thrown into the deep end. And the best part? It’s achieving real change on campus.

Students’ Union Community Garden

Staff and students are welcome to join our weekly community gardening sessions. Cultivate friendships, learn new skills and be part of our sustainable community.

All levels of experience welcome and no need to sign up, just pop in and get gardening!

Green Champions (staff only)

The Green Champions Group is a working group formed of academics, staff and the Students Union. Its purpose is take forward the University’s sustainability objectives through actions and initiatives across the whole of the organisation.

My Stirling Award Green Leaf (students only)

The Green Leaf is an optional add on to any of the three undergraduate and postgraduate My Stirling Award Levels. We have worked with departments throughout the University and the Students' Union to comprise a list of suggested activities and ways to make your current activities more sustainable.

Sustainability off campus

Transition Stirling: food project, tool library, skills sharing and re-homing IT

Transition Stirling is an environmental charity, based in Stirling. It aims to provide a positive response to the effects of climate change, through advancing citizenship, raising awareness and encouraging action.

Their current projects include a food project, a tool library, events to share skills and an IT project that refurbishes and re-homes unused phones, tablets and laptops. The Wood Reuse project was established to give volunteers the opportunity to learn skills to make new items with waste wood.

Planting trees

Who doesn’t love trees? It’s never been more important to plant trees for the future. You can get involved with Treelink Stirling or The Conservation Volunteers. Both organisations are active around the Stirling area, planting trees with volunteers.

Wildflower meadow

On the Verge work community groups in and around Stirling and Clackmananshire to establish and develop areas of native wildflowers. 

The university’s Estates and Campus team along with students and the community are developing a wildflower meadow on campus.
