Academic panel
The key purpose of the Academic Panels (both Taught and Research) is to act under delegated authority from the Education Committee to consider and make decisions on requests seeking variance from the University's stated academic regulations or policy on both taught and research programmes.
Taught
The Panel will consider cases where there is a need or request for a variance to University regulation or policy to be applied, particularly in respect of:
- progression decisions and variant programmes of study
- number of assessment attempts
- requests for a deferred examination on the basis of circumstances outwith the University policy
- maximum durations of study
- requests for leave of absence that are outwith the University policy and regulation
- extensions to dissertation submission timescales
- termination of studies
- re-admission
- requests for recognition of prior learning that are outwith the University policy and regulation

Research
The Panel will consider cases where there is a need or request for a variance to University regulation or policy to be applied, particularly in respect of:
- extensions to dissertation submission timescales
- maximum durations of study
- periods of leave of absence
- viva arrangements
- change of degree programme
- thesis access moratorium
- termination of studies
- re-admission
