Salaries are paid monthly, normally on the 28th* of the month, pay dates can be found on the Pay, Pensions and Benefits page.

*or the last working day prior to the 28th if that date falls on a weekend or on a bank holiday.

Your payslip

Tax

Income Tax is a tax you pay on your income. Further guidance can be found on the GOV.UK website.

National Insurance (NI)

You pay National Insurance contributions to qualify for certain benefits including the State Pension.  Further guidance can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Pension

The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is the main national superannuation scheme in the Higher Education Sector.  It is open to all staff and members of staff are automatically entered into the scheme unless they opt out.  Further guidance can be found on the USS website (external link).

Incremental progression and promotion

Annual increments are granted on 1 August annually until the maximum of the scale is reached, subject to six months service in the grade (whether the grade has been attained by appointment, promotion or re-grading).

Academic promotions are considered by the Academic Promotions Committee (APC), additionally, Senior Remuneration Committee considers nominations to review the salaries of senior staff.  Further information can be found on the policies and guidance page.

Salary increases

Salary scales are currently subject to annual review with effect from 1 August each year.
