Language and Society

Lead: Viola Wiegand

The Language and Society research group is concerned with language and discourse in all aspects of social life. It aims to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation among researchers who engage with language in their scholarship.

Areas of interest for the research group include, but are by no means limited to:

  • multilingualism,
  • translanguaging,
  • language ideologies,
  • communicative repertoires,
  • linguistic landscapes,
  • language policy and planning,
  • language and social justice,
  • literacies,
  • language and migration,
  • language and surveillance,
  • language learning.

The Language and Society research group transcends disciplinary boundaries. Part of Faculty of Social Sciences, the research group welcomes academic colleagues and postgraduate researchers across the University.  It seeks to offer a space for creative dialogue between researchers from a range of paradigms and subject areas. Members of the group are not required to have any prior training or expertise in linguistics.
