Where to publish

You should start thinking about where you aim to publish at the grant application stage, this way any funds needed for open access publishing can be incorporated into your grant application (if the funder allows for these costs). You should also consider what page or figures charges might apply to your article (these are different to article processing charges).

So how do you decide where to publish?

Key elements apply when deciding where to publish whether in an open access or subscription based journal.

Elements to consider when deciding where to publish

  • Your intended audience - for example there are different types of journals: academic, professional, trade, popular. Or perhaps another type of publication is more suitable
  • Relevance
  • Peer reviewed - see the journal's online homepage about their peer review process and who does it
  • Editorial policies - check the details of the journal's policies: the Platform for Responsible Editorial Policies (PREP) might be useful - it maintains a database of journals' current peer review formats
  • Well-indexed - which databases index this journal? The journals online homepage often provides this information
  • Is it Open Access? The University supports publishing in Open Access only journals – you can apply for funding to cover the APC – see: Application to the Article Processing Charge Fund
  • Does your funder require you to publish Open Access? See Funder requirements. Again the University may cover the APC costs - see the University APC Policy.
  • Does the publisher policy allow deposit of your Author Accepted Manuscript in our Open Access Repository: STORRE? Making your article freely available in this way makes it accessible to a wider audience
  • If an embargo in a repository is required how long is it? Note the REF 2021 policy allows authors to respect embargo periods of: up to 12 months for Panels A and B; or 24 months for Panels C and D. If the embargo period is longer there is a policy exception if the journal is the most appropriate for your article
  • Impact factors - see the IS web pages on bibliometrics and citation analysis for further information
  • Be aware of predatory journals - see our checklist

Publisher memberships and transformative arrangements

The University of Stirling has a number of publisher memberships and arrangements that enable free or discounted Open Access publishing for our authors.  If you don’t see an agreement you can use below, you may still be eligible to apply to the University’s APC fund to help with the costs of Open Access publishing.

ACM (Association for Computing Machinery)*

The Library does not have a Transitional Agreement with ACM, however you can comply with Funders’ requirements using a “Green” route in their hybrid journals.

If your article is funded by UKRI or Wellcome (or other Coalition S funders) then ACM allows compliance with these funders’ requirements:

  • Deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript in STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe) under a CC BY licence.
  • Include the funder acknowledgement in your submitted manuscript and the appropriate rights statement: 
    • UKRI Route 2 wording: 'For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising'
    • or Wellcome's Rights Retention Statement: 'This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Wellcome Trust [Grant number xxxxx]. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.'

For non-Coalition S funded or unfunded articles, ACM have a zero embargo policy (but not with a CC-BY licence): deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript in STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe).

ACM has a few fully Open Access journals - you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Journals*

The Library does not have an open access agreement with AAAS but a Rights Retention policy allows compliant open access through another route for cOAlition S-funded researchers (e.g. Wellcome, UKRI). 

cOAlition S-funded researchers (e.g. Wellcome, UKRI) submitting to AAAS journals (other than Science Advances) can meet Plan S requirements (such as depositing the Accepted Manuscript in Europe PMC) and share the manuscript with no embargo.

Include the funder acknowledgement in your submitted manuscript and the appropriate rights statement: 

  • UKRI Route 2 wording: 'For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising'
  • or Wellcome's Rights Retention Statement: 'This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Wellcome Trust [Grant number xxxxx]. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.'

Non-cOAlition S-funded or unfunded authors submitting to AAAS journals (other than Science Advances) can benefit from AAAS’s zero embargo policy: deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript in STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe) without a CC BY licence. 

If publishing in the fully Open Access journal: Science Advances - a 10% discount is available on the APC. The APC will be $4,050 instead of $4,500. This discount is available to all University of Stirling authors.

Within the AAAS manuscript management system:

  1. Select 'Apply discounts'.
  2. Search for and select University of Stirling in the 'Affiliation discount' box.
  3. Click 'Apply discounts' to see the discount of -$450 applied. 

You can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the remaining APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.

American Chemical Society Journals (ACS) (1 January 2022 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in all of the ACS journal titles - in both fully Open Access journals and subscription (hybrid) journals.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library.

Eligible article types: Research articles. Articles that are additions or corrections or editorials are not eligible.

The Stirling author must be the corresponding author:

  • Corresponding author must be identified as the individual who is to communicate with ACS throughout the peer review process.
  • Corresponding author must indicate affiliation to the Institution by identifying it via a provided dropdown menu during the online manuscript submission process.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

ACS applies the CC BY licence to articles and will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

BMJ Publish and Read Agreement (1 January 2023 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in all BMJ Publishing fully open access journals and, in most cases, for funded corresponding authors in hybrid journals. This represents 50 titles covering a broad selection of health and medical specialities.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication for most authors - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library.

  • For fully open access journals, the requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author and the article is an original research article.
  • For hybrid journals, the Stirling author must also be funded by one of the Eligible Funders to benefit from free open access publication.

BMJ will deposit articles in PubMed Central. 

Eligible Funders include UKRI Councils, Wellcome Trust, and several medical charities: Blood Cancer UK, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Innovate UK, Parkinson’s UK, Versus Arthritis. Where your funder requires, and whenever possible, select the CC BY licence.

If you are funded by an Eligible Funder or are submitting to a fully open access journal, there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Non-funded authors publishing in hybrid journals or non-corresponding authors are permitted to deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript in an Open Access repository like STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe) under a CC BY-NC licence.  If your funder requires a CC BY licence – see other options in the Plan S Journal Checker Tool.

Alternatively, non-funded authors submitting to hybrid journals can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the APC cost to publish in open access with the publisher; you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.

Brill Journals SHEDL Read & Publish Agreement (1 January 2023 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in all of Brill’s journals - more than 350 titles journals in Humanities & Social Sciences, International Law & Human Rights and Biology.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author. Brill applies the CC BY licence to articles and will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

Cambridge University Press (CUP) 'Read & Publish' Agreement (1 January 2021 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in the Cambridge University Press complete collection.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The Stirling author must be the corresponding author.

  • Eligible article types: Research articles, Review Articles and Rapid Communications (RRR), plus Brief Report and Case Reports article types.
  • Non eligible article types include: Abstracts, Addendums, Article commentary, Book Reviews, Books Received, Calendars, Collections, Commentaries, Contents, Correction, Corrigendum, Discussion, Editorial, Erratum, In Brief, Introduction, Letter, Meeting Report, News, Obituary, Oration, Product Review, Reply, Retraction.

Select Gold Open Access and the CC BY licence option when publishing.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Cambridge University Press will automatically deposit some articles in PubMed Central, but if your funder requires a deposit you may need to deposit manually in PubMed Central.

Cogitatio Institutional membership programme

The University’s membership gives a 20% discount on the APC fee. The Stirling author must be the corresponding author.

Note all Cogitatio journals are fully Open Access journals so you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the remaining APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.

Select a CC BY licence and as fully Open Access journals these are then Plan S Compliant.

Company of Biologists 'Read & Publish' Agreement (1 January 2022 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in their three hybrid journals:

  • Development
  • Journal of Cell Science
  • Journal of Experimental Biology

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Eligible authors will be automatically identified. There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Company of Biologists applies the CC BY licence to articles and will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

Elsevier Read and Publish 2022-2024 Agreement (1 January 2022 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in Elsevier's hybrid journals including Core Hybrid, Cell Press and Lancet titles. Applies to articles with an acceptance date from 1 Jan 2022 to 31 Dec 2024. (In some Cell Press and Lancet journals this agreement does not cover review articles).

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the corresponding author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Select the CC BY licence option when publishing (required by funders such as UKRI and Wellcome). 

Elsevier also has a number of fully Open Access journals - you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.  As part of this agreement, if our Fund covers the APC cost there will be a 15% discount.

Elsevier automatically deposits some articles in PubMed Central, but if your funder requires deposit you may find you need to deposit manually in PubMed Central. 

Frontiers (UK Framework 23 January 2023 to 31 December 2023)*

This agreement gives a 10% discount on APCs when publishing in any ‘Frontiers in’ title. The Stirling author must be the corresponding author. Covers all article types.

Note all of the Frontiers journals are fully Open Access journals so you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the remaining APC cost:

  • You should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal.
  • Select ‘University of Stirling’ as the payer in the invoice section when submitting your article.  Frontiers will then verify your eligibility with the University and the APC will be paid by the university upon acceptance.

All accepted articles will be published under an open CC BY licence that allows authors to retain copyright.

Maximum APC costs are frozen (fixed of 15 August 2019) for participating institutions during the term of the agreement.

Frontiers will deposit published articles in PubMed Central.

As fully Open Access journals with CC BY licences, these are Plan S Compliant.

IEEE - no formal agreement*

We do not have an Open Access agreement with IEEE. 

However, if you wish to publish in fully open access/gold IEEE journals you can apply to the APC Fund to cover the costs. To meet funder requirements ensure you select a CC BY licence.

For UKRI and Wellcome funded articles in hybrid journals, IEEE allow you to make your Author Accepted Manuscript openly and immediately available under a CC BY licence in STORRE with no embargo from the date of first online publication. This allows you to comply with UKRI and Wellcome requirements but you must follow these steps:

  • Include the rights statement in your submitted manuscript: “For the purpose of open access, the author(s) has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising”.
  • As soon as your manuscript is accepted for publication, send a request to IEEE’s Intellectual Property Rights group at copyrights@ieee.org explaining you want to make your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) Open Access under a CC BY licence in order to comply with your funder’s requirements.
  • As usual, upon acceptance deposit your Author Accepted manuscript into STORRE via Worktribe. 

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) journals*

IET is part of the Wiley Jisc Agreement (2020 to 2023).  This means that authors pay no APCs for any research and or review article that is original research where certain conditions are met. See the Wiley Jisc Agreement details below.

Since 2021 all IET journals are fully Open Access. If using this Agreement, choose the CC BY licence. 

JMIR Publishing Open Access Deal (1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in all JMIR Publishing journals - covering fully Open Access journals broadly in the field of digital health research.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by a flat-fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

During submission, use ‘University of Stirling’ as your affiliation, your university email address and include in your cover letter: “requesting APC waiver through the University of Stirling-JMIR Publications deal via Jisc”.

JMIR Publishing applies the CC BY licence to articles and will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

If you are not the corresponding author you may still be eligible for funding from the University APC Fund: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal (see the eligibility criteria at the top of the submission form).

John Benjamins Read & Publish Agreement (9 November 2022 - 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in all of John Benjamins journals - covering journals in the field of linguistics in the broadest sense.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Article types covered: research articles, reviews and introductory articles.

Select the CC BY licence when publishing.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

If you are not the corresponding author, John Benjamins allow deposit of your Author Accepted Manuscript in an Open Access repository like STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe).  If your funder requires a CC BY licence (e.g. UKRI, Wellcome Trust and EU funders) the CC BY licence can be applied to the Author Accepted Manuscript (if no funder requirement the licence should be CC BY-NC).

Karger SHEDL Agreement (1 January 2023 - 31 December 2025)

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in Karger journals - in both fully Open Access journals and hybrid journals ("Author Choice" titles).

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

By default the licence applied is CC BY-NC-ND - but many funders (e.g. UKRI funders and Wellcome) require a CC BY licence, so choose the CC BY licence if required by your funder. The Agreement may only cover the costs of CC BY-NC-ND licenced articles, contact openaccess@stir.ac.uk if a charge is applied (this can be covered by the APC Fund).

Unless a charge is applied, there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

MDPI Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP)

The Program gives a 10% discount to Stirling authors when publishing in any ‘MDPI’ title. The 10% discount is applied for MDPI publications where you are the corresponding author. 

Note: the discount cannot be combined with other discounts.

When a paper is submitted to MDPI it is automatically matched to the University of Stirling based on the email address used and authors will be asked to confirm the institution choice. If asked if you are eligible for the discount under the 'IOAP' program - say yes. If the paper is accepted, the discount will then be automatically applied. If offered a choice, choose the CC BY licence.

*Most MDPI journals are fully Open Access journals with CC BY licences - in these cases they are Plan S Compliant.

Open Library of Humanities

It is free to publish Open Access in OLH journals. See their Information for Academics.

Covers academic journals from across the humanities including modern languages and cultures, philosophy, theology and history, political theory, sociology, film and new media studies, and digital humanities.

The OLH is a charitable organisation dedicated to publishing open access scholarship with no author-facing article processing charges (APCs).

Funded by an international consortium of libraries that includes Stirling University Library.

Oxford University Press (OUP) 'Read & Publish' Agreement (1 January 2022 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in the Oxford University Press full journal collection.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The Stirling author must be the corresponding author.

Eligible article types: Original research articles (including Case Reports) and Review Articles.

Select the CC BY licence option when publishing and select “Scottish institutions SHEDL affiliated” to request use of the agreement’s funds to pay the Open Access charge: see Steps 2 and 4 in the OUP’s step-by-step guide for authors.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Oxford University Press will deposit the article in PubMed Central, when appropriate.

PNAS Publish & Read 2021-2023 Agreement (1 July 2021 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free open access publishing for Stirling authors in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (PNAS).

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The Stirling author must be the corresponding author.

Eligible article types: all research articles including Brief Reports.

Select the CC BY licence option when publishing.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in PNAS as the corresponding author.

The publisher will deposit the article in PubMed Central, when appropriate.

Public Library of Science (PLOS) Community Action Publishing (1 Jan 2021 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in three highly selective PLOS journals:

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the membership fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that a Stirling author is a contributing author (they do not have to be the corresponding author).

Eligible authors will be automatically identified through PLOS’s submission system – there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals.

PLOS applies the CC BY licence to articles and upon acceptance will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

Public Library of Science (PLOS) OA Publishing Agreement (1 January 2021 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in nine key PLOS journals:

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Eligible authors will be automatically identified through PLOS’s submission system – there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

PLOS applies the CC BY licence to articles and upon acceptance will deposit articles in PubMed Central.

All article types are covered by the Agreement and new article types and journals launched during the term of the agreement will be automatically included.

Royal Society Journals ‘Read & Publish’ Agreement (1 January 2023 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling authors in all Royal Society journals:

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Eligible authors will be automatically identified – there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals as the corresponding author.

Royal Society applies the CC BY licence to articles and will deposit the article in PubMed Central.

If you are not the corresponding author of the article, the Royal Society allows deposit of your Author Accepted Manuscript in an Open Access repository like STORRE with no embargo (deposit via Worktribe) under a CC BY licence.  

SAGE (1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in SAGE’s full portfolio of hybrid journals (including the Premier, IMechE and RSM portfolios). Titles which join these portfolios during the agreement period may not be included in the agreement.

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author - the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Non-eligible article types: book reviews, commercially sponsored articles.

Select the CC BY licence option when publishing.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these hybrid journals as the corresponding author.

SAGE also has a number of fully Open Access journals - you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal. As part of this agreement, if our Fund covers the APC cost there will be a 20% discount.

There are a small number of exclusions where SAGE is contractually prevented from offering this discount. A list of excluded journals will be available from the publisher directly.

SAGE may automatically deposit some articles in PubMed Central, but if your funder requires deposit you may find you need to deposit manually in PubMed Central.

Springer Nature Read & Publish Agreement (1 January 2023 - 31 December 2025)*

This agreement includes free uncapped open access publishing for Stirling corresponding authors in Springer’s full portfolio of hybrid journals (including the Springer, Adis, Palgrave MacMillan, BioMed Central (BMC)*, Nature Research imprints).

Open access publication is free at the point of publication to the author – the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library.

The only requirement is that the Stirling author is the corresponding author.

Eligible article types: (Springer) original research and review articles, brief communications and continuing education articles; (Nature) Research articles which means Original Papers (but may also be referred to as analysis, brief communications, registered reports and technical reports).

Select the CC BY licence option when publishing.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these hybrid journals as the corresponding author.

SpringerNature also has a number of fully Open Access journals – you can apply to the University APC Fund to cover the APC cost: you should apply to the APC fund before submitting to a journal. As part of this agreement, if our Fund covers the APC cost there will be a 15% discount.

SpringerNature may automatically deposit some articles in PubMed Central, but if your funder requires deposit you may find you need to deposit manually in PubMed Central.

*BioMedCentral titles which were previously managed under a separate agreement are now included under the SpringerNature agreement.

Taylor and Francis Transitional Agreement (6 May 2021 - 31 December 2023)*

This agreement includes free open access publishing for Stirling authors in Taylor & Francis Open Select Journals. The following conditions apply:

  • The Stirling author must be the corresponding author. Unfortunately Emeritus or Honorary staff are not eligible.
  • Eligible article types: research articles that will be published in Taylor & Francis Open Select Journals (these are Hybrid journals) by Taylor & Francis and Routledge.
  • Select the CC BY licence option when publishing and include the Funder of your article.

There is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing as the corresponding author under the conditions listed above.

The Open Access publishing is free at the point of publication to the author because the costs have already been covered by the subscription fee paid by the Library. Only VAT is subsequently levied per article (up to a capped maximum) which the Library will also cover. 

If your article will be published in a fully Open Access Taylor & Francis journal, then Stirling authors should apply to the APC Fund for funding.

Wiley (and IET) Jisc Agreement: Details (1 January 2020 - 31 December 2023)

This agreement includes free open access publishing for Stirling authors in any Wiley, IET or Hindawi journal at no extra cost to the author if all the following conditions are met: 

  • the Stirling author must be the "Responsible Corresponding Author" - the author who manages the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process - from submission through publication. Note this is not necessarily the same person that is the Corresponding Author.
  • the article is to be published in any fully gold OA journal or a hybrid (subscription) journal that offers OnlineOpen.
  • See list of journals included in Wiley and IET 
  • the article is a research and/or review article that is original research.
  • select the CC BY licence option when publishing.

If publishing in a hybrid (subscription) journal, the author must order OnlineOpen at the point of acceptance. The guides on Wiley's Author Services site offers detailed instructions on registering affiliation and choosing an Open Access licence:

A few things to note about the Wiley Jisc Agreement:

  • Hindawi journals joined the Wiley Jisc Agreement in 2023. All Hindawi journals are available in open access. A handful of titles (below) are not included as they are part of a co-publishing partnership.

  • Per the agreement, corresponding author means 'the author who manages the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process - from submission through publication'
  • Requests will be reviewed by Stirling’s account administrators, to check whether they meet the criteria
  • This agreement cannot be used to cover additional charges (e.g. cover, colour, and page charges), which individual journals administer separately. Any such costs must be paid through separate arrangement – you can apply to cover such costs via the University’s own APC Fund (select ‘Apply for APC funding’ in the University Portal under ‘My Staff Life’ tab, in the ‘I want to’ panel)
  • APCs for eligible submissions will be covered as long as funds are available in the national account. Per the agreement: 'Jisc or Wiley cannot guarantee the fund will cover all UK articles particularly if publishing increases significantly or if author publication patterns change significantly'
  • The Jisc/Wiley agreement provides full and permanent access to Wiley’s 2020 All Title List as well as open access publishing in over 1400 Wiley journals
  • The 'Transitional Agreement' which governs this deal was negotiated on behalf of member institutions by Jisc, and allows the Library subscription ('read') spend to be redistributed to cover both subscription access and publishing ('write') costs. The funds to pay article publication charges (APCs) are drawn from a national open access account, the balance of which represents roughly half of the aggregate Wiley subscription spend by UK institutions (based on the calculation that half of this payment is for 'read' access to subscription titles, and half is allocated to 'write' costs (APCs). When a request is approved by the Account administrator, the APC, less a 25% discount, is drawn down and deducted from the total publishing allocation.

Since your publishing costs are covered by your BPS membership, there is no need to apply to Stirling’s APC Fund or inform the Library when publishing in these journals.

Increasingly Learned Societies are giving APC discounts to their members when they publish in a Society's journals, so this may be useful when deciding where to publish.

 

 

Open Access Publishing in Books and Book Chapters 

  • MIT Press Open Access Monographs 
    • MIT Press publishes books in the social sciences, art, design, science and technology.
    • Under the ‘MIT Press Direct to Open‘ programme authors can publish Open Access monographs for free.
    • Costs are met partly by the institutions who are collectively supporting the initiative, with the remaining costs being met by MIT Press.
    • Stirling University Library is a supporting member.

 

 

  • Scottish Universities Open Access Press  
    • Stirling University Library is a partner in establishing a cost effective Universities press for Scotland. The press is expected to go live for book submissions during 2022. 

 

  • OAPEN Open Access Books Toolkit  
    • The OAPEN Foundation has created an open access (OA) books toolkit for researchers and academic book authors. The toolkit is a free-to-access, stakeholder-agnostic resource that aims to help authors better understand Open Access for books, increase trust in Open Access book publishing, provide reliable and easy-to-find answers to questions from authors, and to provide guidance on the process of publishing an Open Access book.    University of Stirling is a contributing member of the OAPEN Foundation until the end of 2023.

  

  • Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB)  
    • DOAB is a community-driven discovery service that indexes and provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books and helps users to find trusted open access book publishers. All DOAB services are free of charge and all data is freely available. University of Stirling is a contributing member of the DOAB Foundation until the end of 2023.
